The meeting began at 7:10 p.m. at the Bowling Green Public Library. Dwight Tredway, a
prospective new member, was introduced to the group, and then, all members present were
introduced to Dwight.
Palma Milliman read the minutes from our last meeting of September 22. The minutes were
unanimously approved.
The Treasurer’s report was also read, indicating a balance in the treasury of $324.61.
The treasurer’s report was also unanimously approved.
Under old business, the upcoming KCB State Convention to be held on November 12-14 at the
Kentucky School for the Blind was discussed. Ron Milliman and Lisa McKinley will be
conducting a workshop at the convention on the topic of "Interpersonal Communications."
A review of our SCKCB chapter’s first year’s achievements were discussed. These included:
Stationery was produced by Mike & Kim Parsley
PSA Campaign was created and marketed to 22 radio stations by Lisa, Max & Sue, and Ron
Public Education appearances on three TV programs
Public Education guest appearances on two radio programs
The development of the SCKCB.ORG web site
A very successful 2003 Christmas/holiday party
A very successful 2004 Summer picnic
Dues are due in the amount of $8 per person.
Under new business, goals and objectives for the upcoming year were discussed. Various a
lternative fundraising events were talked about and tentatively planned. A Los Vegas
night was eliminated at this time as it would probably not be cost effective. A golf
tournament is still a possibility. The most likely fundraiser would be a wine &
cheese tasting party. Ron indicated that Steve Ellis, owner of Ellis Place, will let us
use his facility for this fundraiser. It is tentatively being planned for possibly
February or March. Max Robinson suggested that we have informational literature
available at the wine & cheese tasting party to give the people who attend.
Ron suggested that for next year’s meetings everyone take a turn at being in charge of
the program for a given meeting. Alternatively, Kim Parsley suggested that we all
brainstorm and decide on the topics of major interest to our group and then, have
the members volunteer for the ones of interest to them. Kim’s idea was unanimously
endorsed by the group, and it was decided that for January’s meeting, January 19,
an exercise program for the blind would be presented and Kim and Lisa would work
together on that program. For February’s meeting, Max would research and present
the shopping services and assistance available to the blind from various stores
in the Bowling Green area. In March, Lori will present "Supper to Go," a
business owned and operated by Lori’s Mother that should be of great interest to
our members. The program for our April meeting will deal with transportation services
available to the blind in Bowling Green, and Ron agreed to present that program.
Lisa suggested that we also sponsor a program dealing with educating parents of
blind children about blindness, e.g. what to do or not do if you are the parent of a blind child. While it was felt this would be an excellent and worthwhile program, it was also believed that it was most appropriate to be presented at the state level perhaps in conjunction with KCB at some point in the future.
It was decided that our Christmas Party would be held on December 11 at the Bowling Green
Public Library, and Ron would look into securing that date and room for us. Everyone was
in agreement that we would use a maximum of $40.00 from our treasury to purchase the
main finger sandwich platter for the party and Palma will be in touch with all members
to let them know what they can bring to help with our Christmas Party meal. Sue Robinson
has volunteered to bring some dessert items.
Our first meeting of the new year will be held on January 19, and Kim and Lisa will
present the exercise program.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Lori Piokowski
