SCKCB Minutes for February 15, 2007.

The meeting was called to order by vice president Kimberly Parsley at 7:05 pm. Members present were Kimberly and Michael Parsley, Sue and Max Robinson, Sylvia Kersenbaum, and Sam Moore.

The minutes were read by member Michael Parsley, as secretary Palma Milliman was absent, along with president, Ron Milliman. There was one correction to the minutes: The first reference of our technology endowment was listed as being $10. It is in fact $10,000. Sylvia made a motion to accept the minutes as corrected. The motion was seconded by Sue and passed unanimously.

Max gave the treasurer's report. The current balance was $5,280.59. Michael made a motion to accept the treasurer's report. Sylvia seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

The first order of old business was a discussion about our proposed social outings. Max and Sue gave a report about the Brim's Science Museum in Bowling Green. They reported on their previous visit to the museum, and stated that there was much that could be enjoyed by blind and visually impaired people alike. Max explained that much of physics is hands-on, and so of particular interest for our group. They reported that the Brim's Science Museum is willing to open to our group for an evening tour and to make some special accommodations where possible. The cost of admission is $4.00. Max made a motion to have the SCKCB treasury expend the funds for half that cost for each member who attends the museum on a specified date to be announced later. Sam seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

The second order of business was an update on the ophthalmologist and optometrist outreach project. Sue recounted her past efforts sending letters to schools to educate teachers and students about blindness. She said those efforts were very successful, resulting in visits to schools for demonstrations. Sue said the project should begin by collecting names and addresses, and then she can send the letters. In a related discussion, Sylvia suggested we supply doctor's offices with large print materials of our brochure and/or other group information. All thought this was an excellent idea. Max suggested we take a look at updating our brochure in preparation for sending it out to doctor's offices in large print format. He suggested we emphasize topics of interest to low vision patients and patients losing their sight, and he suggested it include information about magnifiers and low vision aids.

During this discussion of how to reach low vision individuals, Sylvia suggested we contact Barbara Deib and try to get on her program, "Growing Older." all thought that was a wonderful idea, and Max said he would pursue it. In reference to the ophthalmologist and optometrist project, Kimberly said that perhaps we need others involved in the address collection process, and suggested Mitchell Plumlee as a possibility to help with the project.

The third order of business was a reminder that dues are due. Everyone present at the meeting was paid up or paid at the meeting. It was decided that those who paid during or after October 2006 would not have to pay again until next year.

New Business.

Sylvia announced that her benefit concert would be October 21 or 28, with the 28th being the most likely date. Both are Sundays and the time would be 3 pm. Location is Van Meter hall on the WKU campus. Sylvia will return in august and will announce the definite date at the September meeting. Tickets will be sold and donations will be accepted at the concert.

The next topic of discussion was an appreciation program for friends of the SCKCB, specifically Tommy O'Brien, Manager of Walton Dr. Wal-Mart, and Becky Rigsby of the Morgantown Road Wal-Mart. one thank you card was signed by all present, but will be held until the next meeting for more people to sign. We will talk more in the future about a formal appreciation program. Max said it is important that those who have supported us financially so far know about our endowment program and what we plan to do with the money.

Kimberly announced that we are on the ALIVE Center's calendar for the third Wednesday of each month for the rest of 2007.

The meeting adjourned at 8:04 pm.
