SCKCB Minutes for August 15, 2007.

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. at the Alive Center in Bowling Green, KY. Members present were Ron and Palma Milliman, Max and Sue Robinson, Kim and Michael Parsley, Ronda and Vicki Pennycuff, Nancy Imran, and Cody Norris. David Welch from Glasgow, Kentucky also joined the meeting via Ron's cell phone.

Secretary, Palma Milliman, read the minutes of our last formal meeting of March 21, 2007. A motion was made by Cody Norris to accept the minutes as read, and seconded by Sue Robinson. The motion passed. This was followed by the treasurer's report given by Max Robinson. We currently have a balance of $5,204.84. A motion to accept the report was made by Ronda Pennycuff and seconded by Kim Parsley. The motion passed.

Next, President Milliman gave a brief demonstration of his new Nokia 6682 cell phone, which talks using the Talks software program. He described the trials and tribulations he went through when purchasing the phone to get the precise phone he wanted and getting the Talks software program installed and fully operational. Then, President Milliman briefly described the new Victor Screen Reader, which he saw and bought at the ACB National Convention in Minneapolis in July. It is currently on backorder, and he will demonstrate it to our SCKCB group when he receives it.

Old Business.

The ophthalmologist and optometrist outreach/educational project was briefly discussed. It was agreed that 1) Max & Sue would put the ophthalmologist and optometrist database on computer to make it easier to reuse and update and 2) the project would be postponed for a while because there are too many other pressing issues and projects, which were deemed more urgent coming up over the next couple of months.

Ron said that he has not yet found a good source for creating the print/Braille plaques we wanted to present to our Friend's of SCKCB recipients. We discussed some alternative designs, and President Milliman said that he would also check with the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville to see if they could make such plaques or direct us to some other source that could.

The issue of the membership dues that SCKCB owes KCB was discussed once again. It was decided that we would simply send KCB dues based on our currently recorded 2007 membership even though there seems to be some confusion between our records and those of the KCB.

New Business.

For our October "Disability Month" activity, we decided to sponsor a professionally audio described movie, perhaps RAY, at the Mass Media theater on WKU's campus. We all agreed that admission should be free, to all who attend, but we could have a container for donations to SCKCB. Before the movie is started, we would have one of our members give the audience a brief description of what SCKCB is, and what our mission is within the community. We would try to show the movie on either a Wednesday or Tuesday evening in the month of October. It was unanimously decided that we would also hold a bake sale in front of Wal-Mart again is year for our White Cane Safety Day. We will try to schedule the White Cane Safety Day event on Sunday afternoon, October 14. We anticipate having Sylvia's piano concert sometime the end of October.

Sue Robinson asked if a note of appreciation had been sent to Chaney's Dairy Barn for hosting our summer picnic. Since it had not, Max Robinson made a motion to direct our Secretary to send such a thank you note to Chaney's Dairy Barn. Nancy Imran seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Ron gave a brief report on the ACB National Convention held in Minneapolis and the elections, stating that our new ACB National President is Mitch Pomerantz. Mitch Pomerantz appointed Ron Milliman as Chair of the ACB Public Relations Committee and also asked him to remain Chair of the ACB Monthly Monetary Support program for ACB. This is the first time in the history of ACB that the same person has been asked to chair two major committees at the same time.

Ron also urged that, since the 2008 ACB National convention is scheduled to be held in Louisville, our local group should participate in and have a strong showing at the convention next year!

President Milliman reminded everyone that our local SCKCB elections are coming up in September, and everyone should be thinking about whom they will support for the offices of President and Vice President. Ron Milliman is not eligible to run for President, and Kim Parsley is not eligible to run for Vice President. According to our bylaws, these two top offices have to be held by a blind person.

The date of our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 19th at the Alive Center.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:36 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Palma Milliman
