SCKCB Minutes for April 16, 2008.

The meeting started at 7:15 p.m. at the Alive Center in Bowling Green, KY. Members present were Nancy Imran, Palma and Ron Milliman, David Welch, Nicole Pumyum, Max and Sue Robinson, Vicki and Rhonda Pennycuff, Andrew Head, Sam Moore, and a new member, Bill Clouse.

President Imran suggested that we all introduce ourselves, since we had some members and guests that don't usually attend our meetings. That was followed by the reading of the minutes from our previous meeting by secretary, Palma Milliman. Max Robinson made the motion to accept the minutes as read, and Ron Milliman seconded the motion. The motion passed. Max Robinson followed with the treasurer's report. We have a current balance of $662.72. Ron Milliman moved to accept the report as presented, and Sue Robinson seconded. The motion passed.

Old Business.

Nancy asked Ron to give us a report on the results of the nomination of SCKCB as the most emerging non-profit organization in Bowling Green, which was an award to be presented by the American Humanics Program at WKU on April 1. Ron commented that it was quite an honor just to have been nominated, because there were many worthy nominees. SCKCB did not win the award, but we were represented at the reception by Max Robinson, in Nancy's absence. Ron and Palma Milliman also attended, and Becky Rigsby, Manager of the new Wal-Mart, was also there, representing the business community in our behalf.

Nancy reported that the Walk-A-Thon, which she is involved in organizing for one of her classes at WKU as a fundraiser for the SCKCB will have to be postponed until next semester. It was just too late in this semester to get everything done in time. It is tentatively scheduled for the first weekend after Labor Day. Nancy asked Ron if he could look into getting the t-shirts printed up for this event, since he has a source for that. Ron mentioned that the second weekend after Labor Day might also be the dates of the KCB State Convention. He offered to check those dates out for us.

Ron announced that he anticipated that the SCKCB will be receiving some additional funding from Wal-Mart, possibly as much as another $1000.00.

David Welch reported that he had a friend who owned a golf course. His friend indicated his willingness to help us with a golf tournament fundraiser. The golf course is in Edmonton.

Grant Program.

Nancy introduced the topic of the grant program. Ron made a motion that we accept applications for the first 2 months of each quarter and leave the last month for the Grant Committee to review those applications and announce the awardees. Max seconded the motion, which opened it up for discussion. It was pointed out that, since the SCKCB would match up to 50% of the total amount requested by a grant applicant, perhaps an organization like KATS might be able to provide partial funding to our members to help with the remaining 50% portion that the grant applicant needs to provide. The Grant application is available in hard copy form, by e-mail, or it will be available on our SCKCB web site. After much discussion, the motion passed.

New Business.

Max Robinson announced that he is now the new web master of our SCKCB web site. He has done some house cleaning and updating of the site already. However this is an on going project, and we are grateful that Max is now in charge of this task.

Our next informal meeting is our summer picnic. It is tentatively scheduled for July 19 at Ron and Palma's house. Max Robinson moved that we allocate up to $125.00 for our picnic expenses. Andrew Head seconded, and the motion passed. Andrew also suggested that, for the sake of time, we post the minutes of the meetings on the SCKCB list instead of reading them at every meeting. Andrew put this into a motion and David Welch seconded. The motion passed. Andrew also suggested that we apply for our own 501c3, instead of using KCB's. Ron agreed that it was a good idea, and was really the best thing to do. Ron moved that we apply for our own 501c3. Palma seconded the motion and it passed. Bill Clouse said that he could perhaps help us in this endeavor, since he had just done one for another organization.

Ron brought up the subject of associate memberships as a continuation of our discussion of this topic in our March meeting. Andrew suggested that perhaps we should consider developing this idea as part of our fundraising efforts. After some discussion, it was decided that it would help to create a task force to further develop this idea. Nancy suggested that Andrew and others who would like to volunteer to serve on this task force/fundraising committee should run with it and see where it takes us. Nancy volunteered to be a part of the task force, along with Max Robinson, Ron Milliman and David Welch. Others who would like to volunteer are welcome.

Our new member, Bill Clouse mentioned that he would be teaching a 4-hour course on Advocacy at the BEST Center on May 8th at 10:00 a.m. The address is 624 Eastwood Ave., Bowling Green, KY. This is being sponsored through the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. He invited all of our SCKCB members to attend.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:27 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Palma Milliman, Secretary
